At a basic level, packet networks are systems that deliver information from point A to point B. &lt;br /&gt;

If you need to send a message (e.g. &amp;quot;we&amp;#039;re out of eggs, please pick some up from the store&amp;quot;) then that message has a starting point (your device) and a destination (the other person&amp;#039;s device). Since the two devices generally won&amp;#039;t share a direct connection, we need a network to pass the message along.&lt;br /&gt;

While many solutions exist, they were not designed to work at the scale that modern infrastructure demands. A wide array of protocols have been developed and stacked together in order to accommodate the growth of today&amp;#039;s internet, and this stack has become overly complex and difficult to work with. To address this, Ouroboros has established a set of five basic protocols that work together in order to implement a simpler, more effective packet network. To explore these ideas, we&amp;#039;ll make analogies to one of the oldest and most well-established delivery systems - the post office.&lt;br /&gt;

The Ouroboros Data Transfer Protocol (ODTP) defines how messages are packaged in order to be shared across the network. In addition to the message itself, it includes the destination address and some basic information like the message priority and who it&amp;#039;s for. Basically, this protocol defines how we put messages into envelopes before we mail them. In order for the contents of an envelope to be correctly handled by the post office, they need to fit a certain expectation. ODTP defines these expectations so that the rest of the system can rely on a standardized packet format.&lt;br /&gt;
